- authors and users of their products.
-
- If you feel that you have any complaint against the author or distributor

-
- Since the Atari ST range of machines started to move away from the games
- arena and became a machine regarded more as an 'enthusiast' machine, many
- users have found that it is an ideal machine for learning programming, this
- has resulted in a vast number of programs being written and released as
- public domain, freeware, shareware and licenceware, unfortunately, all have
- been marketed together which has resulted in users not being aware of the
- differences, this document explains the different titles.
-
-
- Public Domain:
-
- Public domain programs and files have been released by the authors without
- any copyright or restrictions being placed upon them, you should never
- alter the program or credits contained within them. Usually you are
- encouraged to distribute copies to your friends/colleagues thereby ensuring
- a wide distribution.
-
-
- Freeware:
-
- Freeware programs are also distributed through public domain distribution
- channels but the copyright is retained by the author and you must do
- nothing to alter the program or associated files, like PD. you are
- encouraged to distribute these programs, usually on the basis that no
- profit is made by the distributor directly through selling the program.
- These programs are also often wrongly referred to as PD.
-
-
- Shareware:
-
- Shareware programs are NOT public domain, they are commercial programs and
- the author retains copyright to the program and associated files.
- Shareware is in fact a type of marketing not a type of program, unlike the
- commercial programs that you would purchase from a shop or mail order, you
- are allowed to copy, pass on and use the program for a limited time for
- evaluation purposes, then if found useful and you wish to continue using
- it you are required to send a registration fee to the author or his agents
- to purchase a full licence for the use of that program. on registering you
- are often offered telephone or postal support printed manuals and an
- upgrade (if one is produced) details of these offers accompany the
- program. This is the ultimate try before you buy system.
-
- There are also other marketing methods which go by the title of
- licenceware, these work on the basis of selected vendors being given rights
- to distribute a program with a royalty payment being made by the vendor to
- the author, these are commercial programs and should not be copied or
- distributed without obtaining a licence from the author.
